Business Valuation FAQs

What is a Business Valuation?

A business valuation (also called an appraisal) is an estimate of how much a business is worth by a professional that has training and experience in valuing businesses.

Who Performs Business Valuations?

There are few firms like ours that specialize in business valuation services. Most other business valuation professionals are also practicing CPAs, business brokers, investment bankers, management consultants, or commercial real estate brokers. There are a number of professional organizations that offer business valuation credentials. No one credential is inherently better than another. Any one of these credentials combined with valuation experience and a business or finance background meets our definition of a business valuation expert.

Where to Find Business Valuation Professionals

Finding certified/credentialed business valuation experts is as easy as searching the online membership directories of the major business valuation credentialing organizations. Our search page has direct links to the 4 main directories.

How to Evaluate Business Valuation Professionals

A business valuation expert should have at least one major business valuation credential, and business valuation experience. Experience should be measured in both years and number of valuations performed. When is a Business Valuation Commonly Needed?

In our firm the most common reason for requesting a business valuation is because someone is buying or selling a business. Other common reasons are divorce, estate and gift tax planning, buy-sell agreements, buy-ins or buy-outs, partner or shareholder disputes, and business planning.
